Early on a May morning in 1988, Laurie Dann, a thirty-year-old, profoundly unhappy product of the wealthy North Shore suburb of Chicago, loaded her father's car with a cache of handguns, incendiary chemicals, and arsenic-laced food. Driven by fear and hate, she was going to make something terrible happen.

Before the end of the day, Dann had blazed a murderous trail of poison, fire, and bullets through the unsuspecting town of Winnetka, Illinois, and other North Shore suburbs. She murdered an eight-year-old boy and critically wounded 5 other children inside an elementary school. It finally took a massed force of armed police to end the killing.

The shocking story of innocence destroyed by a rich young babysitter inexplicably gone mad made headlines all across the nation and inspired at least two psychotic killers to follow her example. What lead her to do it? Could she have been stopped? The case raised a host of agonizing questions that have remained unanswered—until now. In this book, three Chicago Tribune reporters who covered the Laurie Dann tragedy have pulled together all the available police evidence, unearthed valuable psychiatric information, and interviewed at length scores of people who knew Dann, many of whom had never before spoken to the media about this case. Despite clear and ominous warning signs, a young woman of beauty and privilege was allowed to deteriorate and go slowly berserk—and no one stopped her. Her parents, her doctors, and the police officers who knew her pathological behavior all failed her at critical times. By its passivity and silence, a community comfortable and quiet on the surface, yet reluctant to admit its underlying flaws, became an unwitting accomplice to the final rampage of Laurie Dann. MURDER OF INNOCENCE is a searing portrayal of a family—and a society—unable to cope, and of a young woman who wanted all too desperately only to be loved.

It held my interest. Flowed quickly. I personally felt slightly bogged down on details of a lot of people involved in the main characters life. Just as I was reading this I had a horrible tooth issue. I'm guessing that's what made it more difficult. There were a lot of names to keep track of. Her life story was long and she had many acquaintances to keep track of. This was important to follow the end of the book properly. It was also very sad that this individual did no get the help she so desperately needed. As for her Mother. What a piece of work. Publishers weekly issues a review in the beginning of this book. And ruins the climax. Do NOT read it. I like to read reviews and the recap of the book before I purchase it. Publishers ruined it for me. I almost asked for my money back right away.

Murder of Innocence The Tragic Life and Final Rampage of Laurie Dann eBook Joel Kaplan George Papajohn Eric Zorn Reviews

I am an avid reader of true crime and found this tale of horror on the same scale, if not better than true crime writer, Ann Rule. Detailed, well-researched, well edited, and sensitive to its victims--the surviving victims--children who were physically and emotionally harmed, as well as their families and school personnel. The entire community was harmed but I didn't get a sense that the incident(s) brought them closer together as the authors presented conflicting information. I normally avoid reading true crime books that involve children but I am glad I read this book as I now understand some of the dynamics of school shootings.
I feel like the authors could have done a better job connecting with readers at an emotional level. I found myself having a difficult time empathizing with the victims in this case because they were just presented as 'facts'. The book lacked depth and read more like one, long newspaper article.
"Murder of Innocence" is a different kind of true crime book. They are all sad but this one is particularly sad because it involves innocent children. With school shootings being a current news story I wonder why this one is never discussed.

This it's a true story about a truly sick and mentally ill young woman who walked into a quiet, very upper middle class elementary school one day in 1988 and began shooting. As horrible as this tragedy was, another great tragedy had been taking place in the months, days and even years before. The shooter had been pointed to over and over as having grave mental instabilities yet no one but her ex-husband tried to do anything about it and try he did! But law enforcement wouldn't listen to him and even suggested HE was the crazy one. Her parents were more interested in their Florida vacation home than tending to their daughter's obvious problems and needs. They didn't have time to bother with that aspect of their lives!

This book is a must read for true crime buffs! It held my attention from beginning to end. I couldn't put it down!! The only thing I was really disappointed with is that there were no pictures! If ever a book called for pictures this is it yet there were none. So disappointing!! If it ever goes for a reprint, please add pictures!!! A sad story but a great book!!
So many people who have mental illness aren't dangerous to others but then there are the few that are "weird" that no one can put an exact finger on. They can buy guns, and do scary things that don't add up until a disaster like this takes place. I have worked in mental health and there. Is no law against being strange and it is only in the aftermath that people say "I knew it"! I don't know how you prevent this kind of tradegy other than having people close to the person be more aware and take steps to prevent them from carrying out their anger on others. I wonder if gun control is truly the answer..
Five stars does not mean I loved the content of this book. It means it was well researched and well written. Horror and chilling is my best description. It is about a young woman who goes into madness while threatening any and everyone who ever did her wrong and that authorities, police, mental health professionals, as well as her parents refused to see her as dangerous or get her the help she desparately needed... with the end result the tragic events written so well about in this book. The book is very very detailed, heads up and toward the end of the book more so to the point I was skipping over and perusing for anything else that would be interesting to read about, although I realize the writers were paying respects to the vicims in every way they possibly could. True horror story. Gripping. Read it!
We think that school and other mass shootings started in the 1990's, but there were cases long before. This one is from the 1980's, and it's similarities to recent cases shows that we still haven't figured out what to do with individuals with mental illness that might be dangerous before there is bloodshed.

Almost all of these crimes are committed by men, but here it was a woman who probably had borderline personality disorder.

She harassed people who she held grudges against, often for long ago petty reasons. As people complained to police that they were frightened of what she was capable of, they were told that she had only committed petty crimes and there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute.

Those people realized that they would have to wait for her to kill someone for the system to do anything.

I don't know how much her parents could have done since she was an adult, but they defended and denied her harassing or bizarre behavior.

She refused to consistently see a doctor, causing inadequate diagnosis and treatment, though there was no treatment for borderlines then. She belonged in an institution.
