I realize my vision of the robot you’ve always wanted might not be the perfect choice for everyone. Based on discussions with a lot of hobbyists, students, and educators, though, the robot described throughout this book has many of the capabilities many people are looking for in a robot. Knowing this, I decide to simplify the construction by utilizing off-the-shelf parts wherever possible and to greatly simplify the programming needed by utilizing RobotBASIC – a language I helped develop (visit www.RobotBASIC.org to download your free copy).
My robot has multiple microcontrollers performing various tasks, but the overall operation of the robot is controlled by a real Windows 8 Tablet Computer (not Windows RT). The tablet’s small size lets it serve as the robot’s head and face and having a full featured computer in control makes it far easier to create exciting robotic behaviors. Furthermore, the power of Windows provides the text-to-speech and voice recognition needed to create a more natural man-machine interface..
I have tried to create a robot others can duplicate, but any machine this complicated can always be improved. I look forward to seeing how my efforts are expanded. Some readers may want or need to utilize different sensors, processors and/or programming languages, so I will do my best to explain the choices I made and the algorithms used to control the robot’s behaviors. Hopefully, this book will allow others to build on my work to create the robot they have always wanted.
There are many example programs throughout the text that explain the principles used to build the final programs used to control Arlo. The final versions and all the necessary supporting files can be downloaded from www.RobotBASIC.org.

Arlo The Robot You've Always Wanted John Blankenship

This is the book I have been seeking. I need a robot to use for my other avocation: Artificial General Intelligence. I have been held back by the high cost of building or buying a robot that has most of the senses and human like appendages (or at least mobility, speech, and grippers). I already have the Parallax Arlo base and Mr Blankenship's RROS board. With this book, I believe it will be easy to complete my robot. Mr Blankenship describes all aspects using photographs, drawings, and yes, even math in a way that I can empirically understand and complete the project. There is a chapter covering each aspect of the robot plus two UTube videos. There is also a book on the RobotBASIC Robot Operating System (RROS) available here on Amazon or can be downloaded from the RobotBASIC website. Blankenship has done an amazing job developing demo software for Arlo. I plan to continue where the book ends with my own additions and improvements to my own Arlo. Thanks John!

Arlo The Robot You've Always Wanted John Blankenship Reviews

If you are looking for the definitive build your own robot book look no more. John Blankenship's book " Arlo The Robot You've Always Wanted " is your answer . The core of the design and of the book is the RROS ( RobotBASIC's Robot Operating System ) which is a software / hardware solution to tying all the robot systems together with all the mundane low level code and interfacing already done for you !
The basic functions such as power , power distribution , propulsion and manipulation are covered . The RROS has built in code / hardware to directly talk to motors , encoders , servos and sensors to get you robot powered and moving . And of course you have to have an arm or so.
What good is moving if you don't know where you're going ? The navigation sections cover the digital compass , beacons and IR / Ultrasonic sensors for telling your robot where North is and not to run over Fluffy the cat or hit walls or furniture . All this capability is also built into the RROS and therefore Arlo .
With the added computational horsepower of a PC or Laptop Arlo and the RROS is able to speak and understand voice commands . You can even process vision input and have Arlo recognize objects ( and Fluffy ). The RROS / PC combo allows you to run Arlo simulations on the screen with a virtual Arlo . This way you can test your programs without destroying any furniture. And the same code will run to control Arlo .
Even though this book is primarily about building Arlo , you are not locked-in to doing so . These are ideas applicable to your own vision of what your Arlo will look like and be able to do . The power / versatility of the RROS cannot be understated . The value in this book is it is written in a friendly conversational style so learning feels like your having a conversation with a close friend who has the answers you need . I hope you enjoy the book as much as I have . / sac
I was first introduced to Arlo through the author’s four-part article in Servo Magazine. Without a doubt this was indeed the robot I always wanted so I began to acquire the parts necessary to duplicate Arlo. When I ran into problems I contacted John via email. He has been extremely helpful in solving problems I have run into (problems due to my lack of expertise).

I was able to purchase a copy of Arlo The Robot You’ve Always Wanted directly from the publisher. The book is very clear in explaining the mechanical, electronics, and programming aspects of the Arlo build. He starts with the physical construction, moves to an overview of the electronics involved, and then chapter-by-chapter integrates these aspects, using the free RobotBASIC programming language (available for free at (...)), into a complete functioning robot that you’ve always wanted.

If you are interesting in building a mobile, humanoid-looking, talking robot I highly recommend this book. Also, I would recommend John’s other books, Robot Programmer’s Bonanza, RobotBASIC Projects for Beginners, and Robots in the Classroom
This is a great book for people that want to build a robot that can perform multiple functions, map its environment, make its way around, and recognize an manipulate small light-weight objects and colors. The Arlo robot (Parallax base) and what John blankenship has built upon it is truly amazing and give a very substantial baseline for people wanting to improve and innovate in the field of robotics. The book provides great coverage of the how-to's and examples of the code (RobotBasic) to put together your own "Arlo" and or build whatever you can devise with your own inventiveness. Be sure to check http//www.robotbasic.org for more information and to get started with RobotBasic. Great job Mr. Blankenship. I've been waiting for a good book, easy to read, that covers the whole enchilada for making a useful and recognizable robot.
Get it, Gives the reader the information to build a more advanced robot cheaply!
