Preston Cobb has a wagon-load of guns, a black-market deal with the Mexican government, and a little problem with the dead rising from the grave and snacking on the living. Now, the Devil and his horde have surrounded the Mexican convent Cobb's holed up in. The Devil's got his eye on a holy relic inside and if Cobb wants to make it out uneaten, he's going to have to help the Sisters of Mercy send the Devil and his minions back to Hell.

Dead to Rites Occult 45 Book 2 edition by Nick Carcano Literature Fiction eBooks

I found out about this slim eBook from John Scalzi's Whatever blog, part of his "Pimp your non-traditionally published book" entry. It sounded fun, so I picked it up.

Dead To Rites is a balls to the wall adventure, set during the wild westward expansion (though it takes place in Ole Mexico), with an arms dealer on his way to deliver a shipment of weapons to the federales. On the way, he gets sidetracked by a devilish stranger, a convent with a secret, and a whole hell of a lot of the walking dead.

Plotwise, Dead to Rites offers the perfect escape for fans of action-packed horror, the kinds of things that b-movies and pulp magazines used to give us in spades. It's a horror siege movie for the mind's eye that packs a wallop. For this particular cocktail, mix one part John Carpenter, one part Robert Rodriguez, one part Brian Keene, and add a little Tales From the Crypt.

The dialogue is sometimes a little unconvincing. In particular, the main character (Cobb) uses a sales pitch method of delivering the author's research about the many armaments in his wagon, and while this started out like Ash talking up his boomstick at the beginning of Army of Darkness, it didn't work as often as it was used. This is a one time trick, best utilized outside an action scene. Unfortunately, its showed up one time too many, and ultimately broke the velocity established during the action scenes.

That's a personal taste quibble, though.

Fans of Brian Keene (Ghoul), John Skipp & Craig Spector (The Bridge), and John Steakly (Vampire$) will find plenty of entertainment here.

Dead to Rites Occult 45 Book 2 edition by Nick Carcano Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

First of all, thank you to onlinebookclub for allowing me to read and review this book at no cost.

Dead To Rites by Nick Carcano is a short story set in the Occult .45 series. This particular short story is about Preston Cobb, gun seller.

Passing through Mexico on Dio De Los Muertos with a shipment of guns for the government, Cobb finds himself surrounded by the undead. Escaping the cemetery, he aligns with a group of nuns to fight against the zombie horde and the Devil himself as the latter attempts to regain his powers.

This is a short, quick read. It’s a fun zombie story, that doesn’t take itself too seriously but isn’t just one joke after another until the story loses all credibility. Cobb is a coward, having no problem getting himself out of harms way, no matter who takes his place, yet somehow he makes that endearing.

The nuns are also great, having no problem stepping up and doing what is necessary, and taking names with the guns Cobb provides them. The setting and backstory are just as believable as the characters, and are done with as much swiftness and detail as the rest of the story so that you understand what’s going on, but aren’t so bogged down with boring detail about every little thing to the point that you don’t care anymore.

I do feel that the ending was a bit rushed, and I kind of wish there had been more of a hoorah or to-do with the devil and if/how he will eventually be defeated. That’s not to say the ending is unsatisfying, because I don’t necessarily think that. Just that there was all this build up of will they succeed/won’t they and then when the time comes we’re left with a shoulder shrug/oh okay, catch ya later. And it’s a little bit disappointing because I feel like the characters should be more – depending on who they are – joyous that they won/angry that they didn’t. This fight has been going on all night, and you watched people that you know die, you yourself almost died, or you’re the devil and you’ve been waiting literally a thousand years for this chance to come around again, and all you can muster is eh? I need more than that!

However, despite that, I still very much enjoyed this story, and the short excerpt at the end for another Cobb adventure has me wanting to continue with the series.

I give this a 5 out of 5. Highly recommended, and very enjoyable.
I enjoy Carcano's novellas--a lot. He has a deft touch with characters (even when they are cliches, it's in a well-developed, fun way, which is a still of its own), a wonderful sense of history and one of the most bizarre imaginations I've encountered in some time. My only complaint is that I've read all his work, and am anxious for what's next. This is a writer to watch and enjoy. I hope a full-length novel is in the works--his is a gift that should not be limited to short-form.
